International Nurses Day at NMC Specialty Hospital, Abu Dhabi

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Florence Nightingale was one of the most influential women of her time.  Born in Italy on May 12, 1820, she was the daughter of a wealthy landowner. She went on to become a nurse. During her nursing career, “The Lady with the Lamp” helped care for thousands of injured and sick soldiers during the Crimean War. In her later years, she went blind and became a “complete invalid.”   Ironically, Nightingale required full-time nursing until she died in London in 1910 at the age of 90.

NMC Healthcare celebrated “The International Nurses Day”  with great jubilation and enthusiasm across the hospital.

From the desk of Sr. Nursing Administrator NMC SH AUH:-

International Nurses Day is an opportunity to celebrate nursing and the contribution we nurses make, improving the lives of individuals and their families, the health and wellbeing of whole communities and the wider population. Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers.

At nmc healthcare, the nurses work in emergency rooms, intensive care units, outpatient departments, company based clinics, and resort centers, to name a few. We have many roles – from staff nurse to educator to nurse coordinators– and serve all the areas with passion for the profession and with a strong commitment to patient safety.

The International Nurses Day was celebrated with great jubilation and enthusiasm across the hospital. The wards/ departments were beautifully decorated by the staffs. The celebration program started at 1pm in B1 of tower building. It commenced with opening of the International Nurses Day Theme: closing the gap- evidence to action by Dr. Kavita Bhalekar, Sr. Nursing Administrator. The message of Dr. B R Shetty was read by Mr. Binay Shetty, in which he applauded the initiative to focus on evidence based approaches to nursing services today.

He also emphasized “Dear NMC nurses – the future of your profession is very bright – please take inspiration from the life of Florence Nightingale – our own imaginations are a limit to what can be achieved in one’s lifetime.” Madam C R Shetty appreciated the nurses for their hard-work and dedication and mentioned that every patient who leaves the hospital is satisfied and has no complains about the nursing care received by them. She congratulated them and requested to continue the same in the future.

The major events of the program was the best ward –9th floor, best opd – paediatric opd and best nurse – Mr. Victor G. The nurses who completed 10 years of service were felicitated, along with the nurses who serve beyond the normal duty call.

The program ended with cultural events and gift distribution to all the nurses.
